This paper describes a systematic engineering procedure that utilizes Mean Velocity Profile, Depth and Velocity Data Time Series, and Froude Number in the selection of flow monitoring locations and the analysis of flow survey data.

This procedure is only applicable to flow survey data collected by Area/Velocity (A/V) flow meters as it uses primarily depth and velocity time series for analysis. In this procedure, field surveyed depth and velocity time series and theoretical results calculated using Manning's Equation and Froude Number equation are plotted onto specially configured graphs. By noting the location of the field survey data and their positions relative to the theoretical results on the graphs, the graphs can be used by engineers to identify key information about the monitored flow such as flow regime and the occurrence of hydraulic phenomena such as hydraulic jump.
