Anaerobic digestion occurs in nature all around us. Harnessing biogas as a green energy resource has been done for centuries with varying results. Anaerobic digestion is now approached as a science in Germany. Dependence on foreign energy supplies has left many parts of Europe vulnerable to the whim of foreign governments. In the past decade in Germany, over 3,000 anaerobic digesters have been constructed to supply green energy on a daily basis. These systems operate as a closed loop, returning digested feedstock to the farms generating the energy crops. Schmack BioEnergy has worked diligently for the past five years to capitalize on the European experience, successfully completing the technology transfer with the first digester now producing green energy in Akron, Ohio.
