The Water Environment Research Foundation recently completed a project that produced a draft protocol entitled “Epidemiologic Surveillance and Investigation of Symptoms of Illness by Neighbors of Biosolids Land Application Sites”. The protocol is intended to be used by local/regional health and environmental officials to respond to their citizens and medical providers who report symptoms that they attribute to land-applied soil amendments, including biosolids. The goal is to provide a protocol that will be broadly implemented. Appropriate implementation should provide guidance and assistance to citizens, health agencies, environmental agencies, as well as wastewater treatment plants and biosolids land appliers. WERF will now pilot test the draft protocol and make any needed refinements. Pilot testing will take place under real-world land application conditions by those local health officials and environmental agencies that have direct responsibility for local health issues and/or biosolids land application practices and requirements. This presentation will discuss the development of the draft protocol and the steps being taken for field testing.
