Abstract:

The Cove Area Regional Digester (CARD) is a proposed anaerobic digestion facility for the treatment of cow manure and the production of electrical power from biologically derived methane gas. The CARD will accept an estimated 170,000 gallons of manure per day from surrounding farms. The treatment process will incorporate pre-digestion thickening, anaerobic digestion in an egg-shaped digester, post-digestion dewatering and solids drying. The CARD is unique from other manure digestion facilities since the liquid filtrate generated during the thickening and dewatering stages will be treated in a membrane bioreactor prior to surface water discharge.

Although numerous studies have been conducted on the anaerobic digestion of animal manure, and full scale facilities have been operating with successful generation of biogas and electrical power, to date, there is limited data characterizing the wastewater from manure digestion and treatment, particularly regarding the transfer of soluble nitrogen (ammonia and nitrate) and soluble phosphorus. The design and sizing of the full-scale CARD facility is dependant upon the efficiency of treatment processes and the characteristics of the wastewater. Therefore, a pilot study was conducted on a 1,050 head dairy cow farm located in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania to verify process technologies.
