It has been said that information, not money…now runs the world. Businesses that are the most effective in collecting, managing and distributing information in their organizations – and to their customers - will be best in class. Information - about assets, customers, ongoing operations, and employees – is becoming the differentiator in running a business.

There are two major approaches available when implementing IT systems that run your business. The Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) approach involves the selection of a single system for all of your business information needs. This system is multi-dimensional, providing integration between business functions out-of-the-box. The alternative Best of Breed (BOB) approach calls for the selection of multiple systems, each representing the best in their functional class. This approach requires a subsequent - and ongoing – effort to achieve integration between the components.

This paper will provide perspectives on both approaches, and is directed at utility managers facing this important decision.
