Abstract:

Research was undertaken to develop an open source model that can be applied to activated sludge systems operated as Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs), in addition to other compact solutions such as Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) and Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBRs). The model has been developed to operate with up to 12 cells (reactors) in series. The values of the kinetic parameters for the model were developed from pilot scale activated sludge systems. The process configuration can be any combination of anaerobic, anoxic, aerobic, post anoxic with or without supplemental carbon, and reaeration or membrane cell; it can also include any combination of step feed; the recycles include mixed liquor, RAS, nitrate and membrane bioreactor recycles.
