When the City of New York Department of Design and Construction (DDC) determines a pipeline needs to be installed, any private utility using the City's right-of-way, e.g. ConEd, Cable Vision, Key Span and Verizon, is responsible for the cost of relocating and supporting, if possible, any conflicting lines prior to or during construction. This cost can be extremely high since utility corridors are already congested with a labyrinth of water, sewer, and gas piping systems. Added electrical conduit, cable and fiber optics, and other systems further exacerbate the congestion.

Engineers at Verizon were challenged with a DDC pipeline sanitary sewer replacement project that went directly in front of its switching station Central Office and through four major manholes in Queens, New York. The project was ideally suited for trenchless construction in general and pipe bursting in particular. This paper will discuss the pipe bursting method of trenchless installation. It will also discuss the use of ductile iron pipe, the product of preference for the City of New York, and the attributes of flexible restrained joint ductile iron pipe that allowed it to be used for this project. A final review of this successful installation will involve a discussion of goals met, lessons learned, and improvements that can be made to make the process more efficient.
