Practical biosolids odor prediction models were developed to be use by managers for predicting the odor emission rates of biosolids generated daily at the District of Columbia's wastewater treatment plant. These models evaluated daily wastewater treatment process data and predicted the expected biosolids odor emissions levels prior to recycling of this material on land. Biosolids are the treated nutrient rich organic solids generated by the wastewater settling and dewatering processes. Biosolids are usually beneficially recycled on agricultural land as fertilizer. Sometimes, however, malodorous biosolids odors may drifts from these land application sites and the true benefits of biosolids recycling may be masked by this malodorous nuisance and result in community opposition or legislative bans against the recycling of biosolids nutrients.

This study develops odor prediction models using explanatory wastewater treatment process variables. Our goal was to provide a simple tool for the early detection of biosolids odor emissions so that biosolids manager can notify hauling contractor when malodorous biosolids may be generated by the wastewater process. . This early detection model should allow for the distribution and recycling of biosolids according to the predicted odor level such that malodorous biosolids are distributed to remote land sites. This management process should reduce or prevent odor complaints from the nearby communities. The data in this study was acquired from Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant operated by District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority in Washington, DC.
