Abstract:

The Skaneateles Lake Demonstration Project was established to demonstrate the use of commercially available alternative onsite wastewater treatment technologies in the Skaneateles Lake watershed to protect public health, maintain drinking water quality, and sustain the environment. Alternative onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) are being installed to replace legacy systems at lakefront sites that do not meet new construction standards A conventional drain field is not an option at these sites due to site characteristics including steep slopes, shallow depth to groundwater or bedrock, and/or poor soils for biological treatment. Many of the technologies installed are the first of their kind in New York State.
