City of LA's Biosolids Injection Pilot Project
Abstract:Deep well injection of biosolids is an innovative idea that is being tested for the first time in the USA. The City of LA is involved in this pilot project to demonstrate viability of placement of biosolids in deep geological formations. The challenges faced by the project management were numerous including regulatory and environmental issues, public skepticism and doubts from some of City's own management. Following public outreach and environmental review the permits were granted. Construction began in June 2007 and operation activities maybe underway by the time this paper is presented at WEFTEC. If this project proves successful, other wastewater agencies will have one more alternative way to manage their biosolids.
