Comparative Assessment of Horizontal Fixed-Film Digesters of Swine Manure
In this study, a novel technology utilizing an agitated horizontal fixed film digester was evaluated for the treatment of swine manure in terms of effluent quality and system performance. For comparison, an unagitated horizontal model was also tested. Both horizontal agitated and unagitated digesters operating at an HRT of 10 days effected 73 and 85% removal of VSS from settled swine manure. Furthermore, pathogens reduction was greater than 99 and 93% in the agitated and unagitated digester respectively, with the treated manure readily meeting the Ontario Ministry of Environment criterion of < 2×106 fecal coliform/g solid
