Managing, organizing, and retrieving record drawings from individual contracts for a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) can be challenging. As part of the design and construction of the 20-million-gallon-per-day Seneca WWTP, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) retained PBS&J to develop an online record drawing retrieval system for the facility. This plant is one of the Commission's eight treatment facilities. The record drawing retrieval system allows users to access all record drawings for all contracts for the entire plant. This geographic information system (GIS) will act as a basis for a future implementation of a Commission-wide record drawing retrieval system. A Website will enable viewing, printing, uploading, storing, and updating of all record drawings. The online map-based application provides users the ability to select specific features such as buildings and structures, electrical/yard piping elements, and grids. After the user selects a feature, a hotlink to a list of drawings for the selected features appears. The list displays three hotlinks for each retrieved drawing record. This project involved indexing and inputting approximately 2,200 drawings over 16 contracts. Some older drawings existed only in hard copy format with no electronic files.

This paper describes the work and challenges involved in developing the secure Web-based record drawing retrieval system.
