Abstract:

The study objective was to estimate potential releases of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) to surface water from disposal of unused medicines in municipal solid waste landfills (Subtitle D landfills) and compare the amounts of API present in the environment due to patient dosing with amounts of APIs present in the environment that would result from:

(i) disposal of unused medicines with household waste in landfills

(ii) disposal of unused medicines by flushing

Potential releases of API from Subtitle D landfills to groundwater were then estimated.
