Chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) has been applied at the Oro Loma Sanitary District to achieve high primary clarifier removal during storm events. A new cost effective approach for estimating the dosage and predicting the removal efficiency was developed and implemented. The new approach was based on the integration of bench scale testing and mathematical modeling. This approach was found to be less expensive than constructing a pilot test facility. The CEPT system was then designed and constructed. An extensive field testing program was implemented to evaluate the performance of the full scale system and verify the results obtained from the bench scale testing. Good agreement between bench scale and full scale tests was obtained.
