The Town of Centreville, Maryland owns and operates a wastewater collection, transmission and treatment facility that serves approximately 2,500 residents with a present average flow rate of 0.35 million gallons per day (MGD). This paper describes renovations to the facilities to provide a treatment and disposal system that would comply with the stringent effluent requirements associated with discharge to the Chesapeake Bay and to meet the growth needs of the Town. The objectives were to determine the optimal treatment technology to address parameters such as BOD, total nitrogen and phosphorous, as well as, a disposal system to meet discharge restrictions on flow and water quality within the Bay. The selected treatment technology was a new 0.50 MGD Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) Treatment facility at the existing treatment plant site. Effluent disposal is managed by two options. During the winter, the facility is permitted for 0.50 MGD stream discharge. Throughout the remainder of the year, a 350-acre farm provides an effluent storage and spray irrigation system.
