Abstract:

Throughout the United States today, women are designing wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, and sewer pipelines. Women are involved in every aspect of wastewater design, including specification preparation, bidding, and construction oversight. In a profession once considered “undesirable” to women, many are now making significant contributions to the industry and helping overcome some of waste problems resulting from increased populations and limited water resources.

These women come from various backgrounds and each has their own personal reasons for choosing their career path. This poster will demonstrate in story form who these women are, what they do for a living, where they work, and why they became wastewater engineers. Several personal accounts will be highlighted along with charts and statistics about how the face of wastewater engineering has changed over the years.
