Quantifying emissions of reduced sulfur compounds from kraft pulp mill wastewater treatment plants is important relative to both community odor issues and regulatory compliance. However, because of the many difficulties involved, this has been an elusive goal. In this study, the accuracy of a previously developed spatial ambient air sampling method was evaluated, and the analytical portion of the method was extended to allow speciated analysis of reduced sulfur compounds, at low ppbv levels, and methane. The reduced sulfur compounds measured in this study included: hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide. Via the use of a point source-released tracer gas, and the use of compounds inherently present in the wastewater as area source-released tracer gases, this method was found to provide acceptable precision and accuracy for the measurement of emissions from the various components of kraft mill wastewater treatment plants.
