Abstract:

“Turning Dirt and Moving Data” is a paper that contrasts two key disciplines within the design-and-build industry. The disciplines are Information Technology and wastewater system construction. Information Technology, which deals with computers, networks, communication, data and document management, is a vital part of any industry today, especially in the area of Engineering and Construction. Turning dirt, as a reference to wastewater system construction, remains generally unchanged; while moving data, as a reference to information technology, has changed rapidly. With this contrast is also a similarity: both involve conduits for the purpose of conveyance. One conduit transmits information and data, the other, wastewater. Information Technology has streamlined, enhanced, and improved the construction industry by enhancing communication during construction, monitoring data, and building databases of records that create an electronic imprint of a job for the future. The purpose of this paper is to show a successful document management system in a paperless and wireless networking environment. Therefore, although being two contrasting disciplines, Information Technology dovetails into wastewater system construction forming one complementary process.
