Abstract:

The authors have developed a unique graphical user interface (GUI) that facilitates the rapid and cost-effective CFD analysis of clarifiers. This tool was used to carry out a side by side comparison of four different clarifier inlet designs. The results showed that the LA EDI appears to be the best EDI for high flows. At high flows, the tangential EDI causes a spiral motion in the clarifier that is detrimental to its performance. The authors showed that by adding simple baffles inside the flocwell wall the spiral motion can be effectively broken up and the performance improved for this EDI type. The analysis presented in this paper includes a consideration of the velocity gradient “G” and residence time in the flocwell and the significance of these parameters in the formation of flocs in the flocwell.
