Calibration and Validation of AnnAGNPS Model in a Watershed in Southern Ontario
For more than two decades, watershed based non-point source models have been recognized to be an effctive tool to identify the pollution sources and selection of the best management practices. The Annualized Agricultural Nonpoint Source model (AnnAGNPS) is one of those models and was calibrated and validated for Canagagigue watershed situated at the Grand River basin of Southern Ontario. The model was run from 1991–2000 to simulate the hydrology and sediment yield and the output for first five years (1991–1995) was used to calibrate and the last five years (1996–2000) was used for the validation purpose. Calibration and validation results indicate that the model is can simulate the hydrology process fairly well. The deviation between the simulated runoff was 3.5% in calibration phase and 5% in validation phase. For sediment component, a regression equation based on the historical data was used to calculate the observed amount for the calibration and validation period. The comparison between simulated and observed sediment resulted 6.5% and 28% deviation for calibration and validation phase respectively. However, as the late winter and spring months are very critical for the runoff and sediment yield in Ontario, special attention is required to improve the model performance for this period.
