Abstract:

This paper reports on improved disinfection with a new pulsed Surface Discharge (SD) UV lamp, which is mercury-free. The SD lamp produces a discharge along the surface of a dielectric. The measured UV efficiency based on input electrical power for the SD lamp is 17% compared to 12% measured for a medium pressure mercury lamp. In addition, tests showed that the effectiveness of the SD lamp at inactivating Bacillus subtilis and MS2 coliphage, on a per-dose basis, is higher than both low pressure mercury and medium pressure mercury lamps.
