The Lawrence Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) was expanded and improved to accommodate the City of Lawrence, Kansas, future growth, maintain compliance with new regulatory requirements, and meet facility needs up through the design year 2020. To accommodate future projected storm flows or sanitary sewer overflows (SSO), a wet weather facility consisting of a 40-mgd ballasted flocculation system was constructed to direct discharge with the main WWTP effluent to the Kansas River. During the design of the wet weather facilities, several issues associated with the disinfection of the wet weather flow had to be resolved, including selection of a disinfection alternative, implementation of the alternative, and blending of the wet weather facilities effluent with the main plant effluent. In addition a new sampling strategy had to be developed. The sampling strategy had to be coordinated with regulatory officials. This presentation will provide details on the wet weather treatment and disinfection facilities, viable disinfection options, and performance of disinfecting the wet weather flow.
