Cost and Efficiency of Dose Pacing Strategies used by Drinking Water and Wastewater UV Systems
Dose delivery and UV sensor readings by a model UV system used in drinking water applications is simulated as a function of flow, 1-cm UV transmittance at 254 nm (UVT), and ballast power setting using dose delivery modeling based on Computational Fluid Dynamics and UV intensity field modeling. A semi-empirical equation for dose delivery monitoring is developed and fitted to the data set. The equation is used to simulate UV system performance at a water treatment plant (WTP) using four years of flow and UVT data and various dose pacing and operational strategies. Efficiencies and costs for those strategies are compared and used to provide direction for implementing dose monitoring and dose pacing with drinking water and wastewater applications of UV disinfection.
