Abstract:Protection of ocean water quality is vital to the sustainable use of the seas as a source of food as well as a means of shipping and travel. Regulations detailed in Annex IV of the International Convention for the Prevention of Marine Pollution from Ships, 1973 and modified by the Protocol of 1978 relating thereto (MARPOL 73/78) entered into force on September 27, 2003 and require the treatment of sewage by a marine sanitation device (MSD) before release to ocean waters under specific circumstances.
