COST REDUCTION AND PROCESS IMPROVEMENT OF SLUDGE DEWATERING BY INNOVATIVE AUTOMATION

Abstract:Improvements in sensor and automation technology have made it possible to automate centrifuge-based dewatering processes. Automation allows automatic and continuous adjustment of relevant process settings, enabling an optimal process level 24 hours a day, seven days a week with minimal operator involvement. This results in the potential for significant improvements in polymer consumption, dryness of the cake, recycle load, and operator peace of mind.
Alfa Laval has developed an automated system in cooperation with DHV Water under the name Alfa Laval Octopus. It should be noted that the system is developed specifically for use on Alfa Laval/Sharples centrifuges and to date has not been tested on other centrifuges or dewatering technologies.
While site conditions may vary, in extensive field trials taking place over the past several years at nine European sites, the system has been shown to deliver the following benefits:
Dryer final cake due to better and more consistent utilization of the centrifuge dewatering potential.
Reduced polymer consumption due to the avoidance of polymer overdose in changing process conditions.
Lower recycle load due to cleaner centrate.
Less downtime due to automatic, real-time reaction to changing conditions.
Opportunities for boosting dewatering capacity by increasing operating hours.
On-screen, real-time information on dewatering process conditions and cost of operations.
