Three wastewater treatment facilities were asked to measure total organic carbon (TOC) with a colorimetric TOC method at every point in their plant where chemical oxygen demand (COD) was customarily measured. In addition, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) data was requested for assessment of correlation with COD and also with TOC. This study sought to answer the following question, “Can TOC be used effectively used as a estimator of BOD?“ TOC correlations resulted in BOD estimations that were on average 101% of the actual BOD values. COD correlations resulted in BOD estimations that were on average 102% of the actual BOD values. Additionally, correlations between TOC and COD resulted in correlation coefficients as high as 0.97. TOC was shown to be an effective estimator of BOD.
