Abstract:

A new approach to operation of activated sludge processes by Set-Point OUR is presented. Set- Point OUR represents the maximum oxygen uptake rate under kinetically saturated conditions that is associated with satisfactory performance, including providing an acceptable effluent quality. This OURmax reflects the activity of the biomass in the mixed liquor. The mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS) concentration is then changed in proportion to the ratio of OURset-point to measured OURmax as follows: MLVSS operation = MLVSS measured * ( OUR set-point / OUR meseaured )

This approach allows the operator to maintain a biomass activity that produces essentially constant effluent quality under conditions of changing organic loading rate, changing temperature, and the influx of toxic compounds.
