Abstract:

As data-based technologies become more prevalent at wastewater treatment facilities, more information becomes available for use in planning, decision-making, and training. The greatest challenge for utilities is to effectively store, access and utilize this information to improve the performance of both the facility and the staff. The City of Columbus, Ohio, Division of Sewerage and Drainage, recently completed pilot testing web-based technology for the development of an on-line operations and maintenance training program at two of its wastewater treatment plants. In doing so, DOSD was able to provide a means to train staff on the equipment actually at the plant, thus promoting and fostering a more efficient, well-trained workforce. In addition, the interactive learning modules provided staff the opportunity to benchmark their proficiency against a set of uniform standards, encouraging staff development while preserving training information and institutional knowledge in a reusable system. The on-line training further provided DOSD management with the ability to monitor staff and provide the appropriate feedback throughout the learning process, ensuring that training and development goals are met.
