TECHNOLOGICAL FIRSTS AT RANCHO LAS VIRGENES COMPOSTING FACILITY
Abstract:Like many water and sanitation districts, Las Virgenes Municipal Water District and its Joint Venture Partner, Triunfo Sanitation District, face multiple challenges associated with biosolids disposal from wastewater treatment. In 1989, the Districts embarked on a journey to address this complex issue with a landmark decision by its Boards of Directors to build the Rancho Las Virgenes Composting Facility. With the promulgation of the EPA Part 503 Standards for Sewage Sludge coinciding with the facility startup in 1993, the Districts prepared to meet the new biosolids treatment requirements. First of its kind in California, Rancho prides itself on achieving proactive and innovative solutions to current day issues in biosolids disposal, energy uncertainties, odor treatment and public outreach.
