Abstract:

It is difficult to simulate hydrodynamic and fecal coliform transport in a shallow and small coastal embayment that is influenced by both tide and surface runoff. An integrated watershed-tidal prism model system was developed for the Cockrell Creek watershed and its embayment to simulate fecal coliform in the coastal basins. The watershed model simulated hydrology and fecal coliform accumulation, die-off, and transport processes in both land surface and subsurface of the watershed. Simulated surface runoff and subsurface flows as well as fecal coliform loads from subwatershed were discharged to the tidal prism model segments adjacent to these watersheds. The tidal prism model simulated the fecal coliform transport and fate within the embayment. The model was validated with real observation data from 1985–1997. A series of model experiments were conducted to test load reduction scenarios. The model results show that the use of the linked watershed-tidal prism model approach provides an efficient and cost-effective management tool for calculating capacity of fecal coliform loading in small coastal basins.
