UNCERTAINTY EVALUATION OF SEDIMENT LOADING AND TRANSPORT FOR THE CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER AT ATLANTA, GEORGIA
Abstract:Preliminary studies indicate that three uncertain factors influence sediment behavior in the Chattahoochee River as it passes through Atlanta: (i) reservoir operations at the upstream Buford Dam; (ii) watershed loading; and (iii) in-stream scour and deposition. A key task for TMDL implementation is to manipulate these factors in order to satisfy designated uses. In this study, these factors are integrated within a modeling system comprising the BASINS-HSPF watershed model and STAND (Sediment-Transport-Associated Nutrient Dynamics), a dynamic river model. Uncertainty evaluation employs Regionalized Sensitivity Analysis (RSA) for ranking a set of parameterized input factors. RSA is conditioned on two target endpoints defined in terms of river flow and sediment concentration. The results of the analysis suggest: (i) that reservoir operations at Buford Dam are critical to sediment transport behavior at Atlanta only under strict sediment standards; and (ii) that non-point source loading and fluvial processes are critical under both strict and relaxed standards, and as such should receive top priority for sediment TMDL implementation.
