The paper also provides an overview of a few critical lessons learned.

The purpose of the Wildcat Creek Trunk Sewer Relocation Project was to eliminate the need for maintaining a segment of trunk sewer that ran through a local junior high school site. The concept was to relocate a portion of the Wildcat Creek Trunk Sewer and connect it to the District's Montpere Way Trunk Sewer system.

Recognizing conventional open-trench construction would cause major traffic havoc to the community, District staff decided to specify several alternate trenchless construction methods (pipe bursting, pipe reaming, and horizontal directional drilling) and HDPE pipe for this project. The project called for the construction of approximately 5883 LF of 16-inch ID sewer line consisting of the installation of 2,630 LF of new 16-inch ID sewer line, replacing 1,886 LF of 8- inch VCP with new 16-inch ID sewer, and replacing 1,367 LF of 6-inch VCP with new 16-inch ID sewer. Depth of the sewer varied from 8' to 21'.

The project was the first District project completed utilizing the pipe reaming and horizontal directional drilling methods. Both methods proved to be viable options that have significant advantages compared to conventional open-trench construction when upsizing existing gravity sewer lines or installing new gravity sewer lines in highly developed areas.", pages = "752-756", url = "http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/wef/wefproc/2003/00002003/00000003/art00051", doi = "doi:10.2175/193864703784830144" }
