Abstract:

The Town of Weymouth, Massachusetts is a coastal community with a population of 55,000 people and located approximately 12 miles southeast of Boston. The town provides water and wastewater service to approximately 90% of its residents and has a customer service base of about 49,500 resident and business accounts. The town's collection system consists of approximately 260 miles of mainline sanitary pipes ranging in size from 6-inch to 42-inch. The majority of the town's collection system was built between 1947 and 1980 and thus, the oldest pipes are 55 years old. Wastewater from the town's sewer system is transported to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority's (MWRA's) treatment facility for treatment and disposal. The MWRA charges the town for treatment based upon the amount of flow entering the Authority's system, so an additional benefit of cMOM initiatives that reduce extraneous flows in the sanitary collection system is reduced costs to the town.
