The practice of water recycling in the U.S. is a large and growing industry. In 2001, approximately 1.7 billion gallons per day (bgd) was reused daily in the U.S. This is a small fraction of the total volume of municipal and industrial wastewater generated and the future potential for reclaimed treated wastewater is enormous. However, there are a number of issues, barriers and impediments to widespread water reuse including lack of available funding, public acceptance, documenting the economics of water reuse, and the need for additional research. Research is needed to ensure technology transfer, to promote reuse for specific applications including industrial applications such as cooling towers, process water, and ultrapure water. In addition, industrial wastewater effluent can be reused for other purposes. The WateReuse Foundation, a non-profit education and research organization, is involved in advancing the science of reuse, recycling, and reclamation through meaningful, leading edge, applied research. This paper provides a discussion of current water reuse research needs and an overview of the Foundation's research agenda. Currently, the Foundation is engaged in 17 projects and is considering nine additional projects for funding in 2003. The Foundation's projects address a variety of research areas including: general and educational; technology and technology transfer; emerging pollutants and contaminants of concern; public acceptance; economics; and marketing.
