The DowReichhold plant in Kensington, GA manufactures styrene-butadiene and acrylonitrile–butadiene latex. As a result of the production activities, two wastewater streams, identified as whitewater and distillate, are generated. The performance of the treatment plant historically was erratic and resulted in periodic effluent exceedances for BOD, COD, and ammonium. To address this issue a treatability study was conducted, and the data generated in this study were used to develop a basis of design for upgrading the WWTP. Based on the treatability study and the projected waste loadings, the treatment plant was modified to incorporate denitrification followed by nitrification. The pretreatment system consisting of latex coagulation remained in place as is.

The existing aeration basins were converted to denitrification tanks by replacing the blowers with mixers. The biomass in this tank degrades the organics in the wastewater by using the oxygen in the nitrate. The overflow from the denitrification tanks drains into what was previously called the spray pond. This pond was converted into an aeration tank to serve as a nitrification basin. Since plant modifications were completed in June 2002, the treatment plant has performed up to expectations since day one.
