Abstract:

Perchlorate salts are used widely in the manufacture of fertilizers, munitions, solid rocket fuels, matches, air bag inflators, photochemicals and pharmaceuticals. Perchlorate is a soluble anion that results in the breakdown, or decomposition of perchlorate salts from these manufacturing operations. Perchlorate is highly soluble in water and relatively resistant to decomposition under aerobic conditions. It is biodegradable under anaerobic conditions. Perchlorate has been found to have inhibitory effects on the human thyroid hormone function. Thyroid hormone deficiencies can affect normal metabolism, growth, and development.
