Abstract:

The first half of the paper presents characteristics and operational trends of the 460 membrane drinking water and wastewater facilities operating in the 50 states of the U.S. Included are the results of a recently completed Bureau of Reclamation project that updated plant operational statistics to include plants beginning operation in the years 2000 through 2002. The second half of the paper discusses several concentrate/backwash management issues as well as the related regulatory needs and challenges.
