TMDLs: A Simplified Approach to Pollutant Load Determination
This paper describes an approach used in New Jersey to characterize the relative contribution of point and nonpoint sources of pollutants in its largest watershed, the Raritan River Basin. The simplified “screening level” methodology utilizes only existing data and does not require advanced modeling techniques. Using the results of the approach, decision-makers can better focus TMDL studies that concentrate on the true pollutants of concern, from the proper sources, and at the appropriate locations and times.
