It was found that fecal coliform count in UASBR effluent was of the order of log cycles of six, which is quite high Lime and Fenton's reagent have been evaluated to disinfect these effluents with an objective to augment the existing plants for their fecal coliform removal efficiency. Lime in conjunction with FeSO4 has been found to remove fecal coliform in the order of three log cycles. FeSO4 could neutralize the pH as well as it decreased the COD and TSS. Fenton's reagent removes fecal coliform to the 3.5 log cycle at a dose of 220 mg/l of H2O2 and 20 mg/l of FeSO4 (contact time of 1 hour). However, this reaction occurs at pH 3-4. So, in order to neutralize, without adding any chemical, a separate stream of effluent treated with lime (high pH) was mixed with it. Treatment with lime and Fenton's reagent can also reduce COD and TSS in the effluent, thus meeting effluent standards.", pages = "663-676", url = "http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/wef/wefproc/2002/00002002/00000014/art00052", doi = "doi:10.2175/193864702784248052" }
