On-site electro-chemical generated hypochlorite is a low-cost, strong disinfectant and oxidizing agent with a broad spectrum of applications, and with minimal associated hazard. This type of generation has been in existence for more than 25 years but only in the last few years has it emerged as a recognized viable method to replace chlorine gas and high strength hypochlorite. This paper will discuss new manufacturing techniques that have proven to reduce raw material consumption and operating costs, with equal or lower capital investment for this two decade old process.

Typical operating current density is approximately 0.8 Amps per Square Inch (ASI) or less. It has been determined that increasing the operating current density by 50%, will increase the production rate by 50% and have a slight beneficial effect on current efficiency and product concentration. It was also determined that the salt utilization, current efficiency, and product concentrations are all improved by controlling the electrolyzer operating temperature below the conventional operating parameters. A further power consumption and production rate improvement can be realized by feeding all the brine to the inlet of the cell but splitting the water addition between the inlet and at least one other point along the length of the cell.
