Abstract:

Pilot-scale surface-flow (SF), subsurface-flow (SSF), and floating aquatic plant (FAP) constructed wetland system designs were installed and evaluated to determine the effectiveness of constructed wetlands to treat tertiary effluent wastewater in a Midwestern U.S. climate (central Illinois). Physicochemical treatment efficiency parameters monitored included pH, temperature, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, etc. The quantity and diversity of the microbial communities in this pilot-scale constructed wetland system were also investigated.
