The major objectives of the study were to: (1) determine the location and extent of sulfide formation; (2) determine the most effective chemical and/or physical means for reducing and controlling sulfides at Deer Island; and (3) development of recommendations and a schedule for implementing a long term pretreatment program. Aqueous sulfide concentrations at the North Main Pump Station influent and the gaseous sulfide concentration at the inlet of the primary odor control facilities provided a direct indication of the sulfides entering Deer Island from the north system and the degree of odor control required.
