Abstract:

An alternative primary treatment process, utilizing a high rate screening technology known as Continuous Deflective Separation (CDS) combined with a flocculation process has been developed and is now undergoing field evaluations. The process has been shown to be capable of removing a high proportion of turbidity, TSS, and associated pollutants from raw sewage, achieving a highly clarified effluent in a rapid process.

In the first field trial, a demonstration of the process for peak load lopping, the process treated sewage to a quality that allowed effective disinfection. The effluent was then stored in an open detention basin within an urbanized area without any notable odor or aesthetic issues. This strategy will enable the water authority involved to store sewage during high flow periods saving significant capital outlay for upgraded sewerage or enclosed storage.
