Bench-scale, pilot and full-scale testing were performed to verify Class A compliance using an FKC screw press to simultaneously dewater and pasteurize biosolids. Vector attraction reduction requirements were attempted by adding quicklime to liquid biosolids at dosages of 0.2-0.3 g/g of dry solids. Pathogen reduction was sought by thermally treating the biosolids via a steam-heatable screw. For pilot and full-scale testing, temperatures equal or greater than 70 degrees Celsius were verified through the screw press screen holes using type K thermocouples. Detention times greater than 30 minutes in a full-scale screw press were verified by dye testing. Polymer dosages ranged from 3.5-16 g/kg of dry solids. Biosolids were dewatered from 0.8-4.5% to cakes of 24.7-51.8% total solids. Vector attraction reduction was met in pilot scale testing. Results indicate that pathogen reduction can be met in a full-scale unit. Further testing is planned to show complete Class A verification.
