Abstract:When the term “paperless office” first became popularized some 30 years ago, a not-toodistant future was envisioned whereby business information was transmitted over wires to small computers at each employee's desk, where memos and other traditional business documents would exist electronically rather than on paper. No longer would we need all those documents crowding our desks and file cabinets, because everything we needed would be in some electronic form, saving us the trouble of digging for the information we sought. Inherent in this utopian vision was the notion of vastly more efficient business operations, greater productivity, reduced operating costs, and more intelligent decision making.
