Abstract:

A wide variety of structural and non-structural stormwater best management practices (BMPs) are available to improve stormwater quality. Implementation and feasibility for any of the available options is assessed based on identification of the target pollutants and their associated source. Site suitability and other physical constraints that affect constructability also need to be considered to determine the most suitable stormwater controls for a particular site.

Suspended solid particles, floatables and dissolved metals are the most common targeted pollutants. Solids are typically removed by settling or filtration while dissolved metals rely on biological or chemical treatment systems. This paper is intended to describe the steps that should be taken in the selection of the most appropriate BMPs, including construction and operation and maintenance considerations.
