Abstract:

The results of this AwwaRF collaborative research project on energy management can be applied by a utility to develop an overall energy management strategy to save the utility money. A key in the strategy includes integrating the procurement opportunities with capabilities for managing their use. Details are identified on specific practices that were used by case study companies that demonstrated real savings. These best practices were identified within seven broad practice areas. A best practice model for water/wastewater utilities was developed to provide an architecture for targeting specific best practices and showing the interrelationships between the practices. The seven key areas of energy management that were studied are the following:

General Energy Management Best Practices

Energy Service Procurement

Asset Life-Cycle Performance

Information Systems and Analysis

Contingency/Emergency Planning

Real-Time Operations

Utility Staff Skills-Training Incentives
