Abstract:

This paper describes a pilot study to treat layer and broiler manure with fly ash and iron salts to produce a stable product that can be used as a soil amendment as topsoil. The process reduced fecal coliforms to detectable levels and significantly immobilized manure phosphorus and trace elements. Treated layer manure increased corn yields compared to untreated manure, likely as a consequence of increased soil water holding capacity.
