The Lake Champlain watershed, which covers northern New York, Vermont and southern Quebec, has received unprecedented television coverage for two and a half years. This unique media partnership, Champlain 2000, was developed in partnership with WPTZ NewsChannel 5, the local NBC affiliate, and KeyBank. More than 125 weekly news segments and six half-hour specials have increased viewer knowledge about Lake issues and provided good visibility for more than 100 organizations. Using balanced news reporting, Champlain 2000, places the successes and challenges facing the watershed into the hands of 600,000 residents. The series, which draws many of its stories from Lake Champlain Basin Program projects, is complemented by weekly web site updates on both www.lcbp.org and www.wptz.com. Champlain 2000 has served as a national model, and was well received at the 9th International Lakes Conference in November, 2001 held near Lake Biwa, Japan.
