Abstract:

Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources (BASINS) is a multipurpose environmental analysis system for performing watershed- and water-quality-based studies. BASINS system is configured to support environmental and ecological studies in a watershed context such as the development of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL). The system architecture in BASINS 3.0 is completely reengineered. Unlike its predecessor, all customized components of BASINS such as model interfaces, data management utilities and watershed assessment tools are developed as ArcView extensions, thereby, allowing users the capability to only load extensions needed for their BASINS project. This new architecture is more open and promotes growth, paving the way for users and other developers to develop new extensions that might be useful not only for themselves but to the entire BASINS community. The new architecture also allows the system to support several levels of hardware and software sophistication. For example, users may not need to acquire Arcview's Spatial Analyst extension if they do not intend to use BASINS components that require Spatial Analyst. The new version offers several new and improved components such as an automatic delineation tool, a new manual delineation tool, a new Windows interface for HSPF, a new model called SWAT, and several data management tools such as grid projector, and NHD download tool
